Blind Leaders Beget

It has become common in our day for academics to consider themselves too smart for the Gospel of a crucified and risen Lord and despise the thought of atoning sacrifice or of sin as an offense against God.  Academic attainment and Christian faith have become oxymoronic.  In the 50’s and 60’s there was an opposite correlation between education and faith.  A tedious tale how things became so, but the net is perverse.  “Let not mind be blinder by more light; nor faith by reason lose her sight.” (Donne)

Complete Tolerance = Contempt

“No deeply religious man is satisfied with a universal tolerance of religion, partly because, if his convictions are profound, he is so keenly aware of the terrible mistakes, intellectually as well as practically, which can be made in the name of religion. The truly religious man knows that we cannot responsibly state a faith unless we claim that it is true, and that we cannot responsibly claim that it is true unless there is some means of disproving it…. Complete tolerance, therefore, is not a mark of respect, but rather a mark of contempt.” (Trueblood)

Be Still

“Idle hands cannot do the Devil’s work!” says concussion-addled Basil Fawlty (John Cleese), frustrated manager and owner of Fawlty Towers, (“The Germans” episode), after his zeal to do good nearly destroyed his hotel and landed him in the hospital. Everywhere I hear – “all that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” There are times when that is true, when silence amounts to cowardly complicity. Paul says that God’s death sentence falls not only on those who do wickedness but those who stand by and approve with their silence. (Romans 1:32) But there are also times when stillness furnishes the most powerful resistance. Our challenge is to know what time it is. We cannot transmit…

Look Up

“Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these, who brings out their army by number. He calls them all by name. by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power, not one is lacking.” (Isaiah 40:26) This is the Bullet Cluster – one of several clusters of colliding galaxies that the Hubble space telescope has discovered. Each of the hundreds of colliding galaxies has its own untold billions of stars. Astronomers study these clusters to find out about dark matter – which comprises about 90% of the mass of the universe, but is almost completely unknown to us and unpredictable. Some parts of the Bullet Cluster are moving at millions of miles per…

The Bride Waits

Rationalizations of advancing secularism as the Church’s fault blame Christ’s Bride for being rejected by most men. This is nothing new under the sun.  Christ’s Church always appears weak and forsaken, as the list of heroes of faith testifies in Hebrews 11-12. Spiritual abandonment endangers Western society more than it does the Church – like the house swept clean that becomes home to “seven other spirits more wicked than itself…” (Matthew 12:45) There had never been a Hitler but for the spiritual vacuum of the Weimar Republic. He set himself to undo a “thousand years of Christian domestication” hoping, he said,  “to see in the German youth the eye of the beast”.  He got what he wanted.  The chaos bred of misshaped…
